Old Tradition Of Books v/s New Tradition. - Saturday, January 28, 2012

As the world around us is getting modernized and adopting the new ideas and trends of living. It has been already proven that the human being is running away from their responsibilities and adopting the modern trends. In every aspects; if we just compare the past to the present, we can't put our opinion either 'everything has been changed' or 'nothing has been changed' . Some time we realize that nothing has changed from the past to the present and sometime we realize the opposite. The interesting thing is that, we do possess the actual proof of our views.

Here, we do not criticize the trends we are adopting or the modern living standards. But as a reader, we are comparing some essential and running issues we generally face in our daily life.Comparing the 'old tradition of books to the new tradition of books', we realize that a lot has changed with time. Here we are elaborating the few.

Print on Demand - is the quick and cost effective way useful for publishers as they no longer have to store books at warehouses if the book is in low or unknown demand. This is a huge advantage to small publishers who can now operate without large overheads.

E- Book Revolution - Two years back the e-books constituted 1% of total books sales, a figure that's now closer to 10%.As these books are less expensive the consumer is benefiting from the lower prices and manufacturers are enjoying massive sales. For self publishers this is a boon as they can earn a lot even from the low priced e- books. Most publishers still insist on acquiring electronic rights along with print at the royalty rate that's been in place for years: 25% of net profits. Amazon (AMZN), on the other hand, offers authors a whopping 70% of net profits for e-books sold in the U.S. Admittedly, the online retailer carries a large number of caveats, most notably that the book must be priced between $2.99 and $9.99. Barnes & Noble (BKS) and Apple (AAPL) offer similar royalty rates. If the rights of publishing are kept by the authors and they self published the e- books they would definitely earn more on their own than with the publishers.

But there is a word of caution in the internet world as many authors use the e-publishing platform naively and upload material that is not of value. As the books which are printed need a proper makeup so does the e-books require an artwork and editing so one needs to be good at it or hire some expert.Distribution is also independent of the publishers who try to make the books visible on the front shelves in stores, in e-publishing books have the same place and are preferred because of the good work of the author.

Accessible publishing uses the digitization of books to mark up books into XML and then produces multiple formats from this to sell to consumers, often targeting those with difficulty reading. Formats include a variety larger print sizes, specialized print formats for dyslexia, eye tracking problems and macular degeneration, as well as Braille, DAISY, Audiobooks and e-books.

In past, not going so far from the present, we feel that the actual responsibilities of books is ruining day by day. That time, writers put a benchmark to the the new generation writers. They were the actual think tank of the issues created that time. They not only indicated their fingers to the problems or issues but also highlighted the resolutions of that problems ignoring the problems they could face afterwards. They really wanted to write something meaningful to the readers, but in the present time what we are seeing is, the responsibility of the writers of writing books is changing drastically.

Actually the priority is selling more books and earning more and more rather than keeping the responsibility of writing intact. If we talk about the exploring corruption in our society, we really feel that there is a bit responsibility of the modern writers because they do not tell the actual cause and actual solutions for the problems but only focus to include the things beneficial for the selling of their books. Same goes with the newspapers and magazines. They mostly try to keep theirs readers away from the actual.

The modern writers, not from the books industry, also from newspaper and magazine world try to make their writing object spicy and more spicy.

This trend is not good for both, for the readers and also for the writers. We can try to change this trend, at least by adopting the meaningful books.

As in the past the work of great editors was considered useful the generation Y writers also need to respect the same culture if they want to be successful in the long run.One should resist the temptation to "go it alone" in the long run.The writer will become an entrepreneur with a short shelf life, in a world without publishers or even shelves. Come lets work together and value the works of people who were the actual writers.
